MANILA – As the title of the song goes, young Filipina singer Charice Pempengco will get her “one moment in time” which she will render with pride and with gusto.
And the reason is simple.
Charice, 15, is the only Filipina entertainer and singer who was invited to perform in one of the pre-inaugural programs when Barack Obama is inducted as the new president of the US on January 20.
Before she left with her mother for the US Friday night, Charice revealed she will render two songs – “One Moment in Time” and “God Bless America” – at the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel on Monday (Tuesday, Manila time).
The Grand Hyatt is one of the two pre-Obama inaugural venues also on Monday, the other being hosted by the Lincoln Memorial which will feature an all-star lineup, including classical musician Yo-Yo Ma and rock singer Bono.
Reports are that world famous TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey had recommended Charice to sing at the pre-Obama inaugural party at Grand Hyatt.
Oprah is said to have described Charice as “the most talented girl in the world” when she performed in his widely-watched program in May 2008.
Charice has been in the international limelight since she was discovered by the world through the video-sharing website YouTube.
Aside from Charice, three other Filipinos have been invited to attend the historic inauguration Obama, the first black president in the US, on January 20.
They are Luisa Kristabel Manliclic, 16, a student of the all-girls Catholic school St Theresa’s College in suburban Quezon City, Metro Manila; and college freshmen Paul Michael Thomas Cruz and Anna Marie Liwanag.
Manliclic is a Youth for Understanding (YFU) exchange student at the Mohave High School in Bullhead, Arizona.
Her father said Manliclic was chosen by the Presidential Classroom through the YFU for being an exemplary student at Mohave High School where she is in the senior year.
The older Manliclic described YFU as a 50-year-old organization connection with the Presidential Classroom of the US.
On the other hand, Cruz and Liwanag were selected by the Presidential Inaugural Conference for their exemplary performance during the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington and New York in 2007.
At that time, Cruz and Liwanag were still high school seniors ast the Reedley International School also in suburban Quezon City.
