The Super Bowl XLIII | Super Bowl 43 historic event last February 1, 2009Â featured American Football Conference (AFC) champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Arizona Cardinals who battled for the 2008 season championship of the National Football League (NFL).
The event was played in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Super Bowl 43 event was viewed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and an estimated 95.4 million viewers in the US.
Though it failed to surpassed last year’s Super Bowl XLII record 97.4 million viewers which featured New York Giants and New England Patriots.
Super Bowl XLIII (43) made some record marks in the National Football Leagues (NFL) history. Pittsburgh Steelers earned its sixth Super Bowl win, making the record for most Super Bowl wins.
Steelers linebacker James Harrison intercepted Warner’s pass (Cardinals) in the end zone who then took off down the sideline for the longest play in Super Bowl history – a 100-yard return for a touchdown 18 seconds before the end of the half time.
Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes who caught nine passes for 131 yards and made four receptions for 71 yards including a game-winning “controversial” touchdown was named Super Bowl MVP. Holmes is only the sixth wide receiver to win the award.
Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner set a record for passing yards in the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl. He made 224. The previous record was 211 yards by Jake Delhomme of the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald tied an NFL record with three touchdown receptions in a playoff game – which all occurred in the first half. He also became the first player in NFL history to accomplish that feat in a conference championship game.
Fitzgerald also set a single postseason record with 419 receiving yards, surpassing Jerry Rice.
The Pittsburgh Steelers together with the New England Patriots are the only team to win multiple Super Bowls in a decade.
