MANILA – A half brother of noted singer Allan Pineda, a member of the Grammy Award winning group Black Eyed Peas, was shot dead by two still unidentified gunmen while visiting his girlfriend in a city in Pampanga province, Central Luzon, according to the police.
Police identified the victim as Joven Deala, 21, who immediately succumbed to a bullet wound in the head at about 1 a.m. Monday in front of the apartment of his girlfriend in a “barangay” (village) in Angeles City, Pampanga, also the home province of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Police said Deala was the half brother of Pineda, more popularly known as “apl.de.ap” and a member of the US-based singing group Black Eyed Peas.
Based on initial investigation, police said the two unidentified assailants approached and killed Deala while he was eating a late meal with his girlfriend inside his late-model sports utility vehicle.
The vehicle was then parked in front of the apartment of Deala’s girlfriend in the village when the killing occurred, police said.
Police said they are looking into several motives, including “love triangle” following reports that Deala’s girlfriend has a child with her estranged husband.
Pineda was born and grew up in a village Angeles City until he migrated 23 years ago to the US where he later made a name in the international music world by becoming a member of the Black Eyed Peas.
Pineda, his relatives and acquaintances said, is the son of a Filipino mother and an African-American serviceman who was then assigned to the former US military installation at Clark air base also in Pampanga.
His relatives said Pineda was able to leave for the US when his father acknowledged him as his son.
His relatives also revealed that since he became famous, Pineda has returned several times to his village where he has been giving financial assistance to poor families, especially the so-called Amerasians like him.
