MANILA – A 20-year-old son of a seaman topped the licensure examination for chemists given in Manila in early September 2009.
Marc Ryan Anthony Jimenez Puno, a graduate De La Salle University got a 90 percent rating to top the 292 who passed the tests.
Puno majored in Biochemistry and graduated summa cum laude. He is now teaching at his alma mater.
Puno wants to pursue biochemistry studies and perhaps obtain a doctorate degree abroad. He added he intends to be a catalyst of national development through science. His current goal is to do research on protein chemistry, synthetic biology, molecular basis of diseases and drug design.
His proud parents, Emmanuel Puno and Emerita Jimenez, could hardly hide their joy, with his father stressing:
“At least our wish for our son to finish his studies came true. But his topping the licensure examinations might be too much for us to wish. He made us proud and honored the family and De La Salle.â€
Emmanuel is a native of Antique while his wife is from Macabebe, Pampanga.
With sheer determination, Emmanuel went to Manila and took a job as a restaurant helper, worked his way up to become an assistant chef in one of the five-star hotels in Metro Manila before he made it as chef of a luxury liner.
Away from his family most of the time as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), his wife maintains a “sari-sari†(variety) store to meet the daily needs of their four children – Mar, John Chamver, Vernice Angelique and Laurebelle.
