Education Secretary Jesli Lapus announced this morning that the suspension of classes at all levels in public and private schools in Metro Manila will remain until Wednesday (September 30) in light of the devastation caused by typhoon “Ondoyâ€.
He said further announcement will be made within the day should there be a need to extend the suspension of classes in the National Capital Region (NCR), which was one of the major areas hit by massive floods.
The Secretary, who is also a member of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), added that the Department of Education will leave it to local government units to decide when to lift the said suspension.
In an interview on dzBB radio, Lapus said: “Lahat ng antas ng paaralan publiko at pribado sa NCR, wala pa ring pasok bukas. Patuloy ang suspension natin dito sa NCR (Classes in all levels in public and private schools in Metro Manila will still be suspended Wednesday).”
Earlier today, the local government of Marikina has declared a suspension of classes until Friday (Oct. 2) to give ample time for local officials to attend to typhoon victims in the city.
Lapus said at least 140 public schools have been used as evacuation centers for some 9,000 families affected by tropical storm “Ondoy.” – GMANews.TV (including inset photo)
