October 4, 2009 – Ateneo hoped to make a back to back Championship by finishing the UAAP Season 72 Finals in Game 2 of their Best of 3 Championship series with the University of the East.
But the back to back dream was out of reach for the Ateneo Blue Eagles team as the UE Red Warriors held on and survived the Ateneo onslaught by outscoring ADMU Blue Eagles, 23 to 8 in the 2nd and 3rd quarter at the jam-packed Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Donning their ‘lucky’ red jerseys, the UE Red Warriors came in strong at the start of the 4th quarter, leading 10 points 63-53 against the Ateneo squad.
Even though visibly outnumbered, UE Red Warriors fans made the loudest noise as the Ateneo Blue Eagles fans kept seated and faces shocked at the sight of their team losing Game 2 and postponed their celebrations for a back to back victory.
UE routed Ateneo with a 20 point win, 88-68, extending the Best of 3 Championship series to an exciting sudden-death match Game 3 on Thursday, 08-October, 2009.
