“Mayon Volcano is showing signs of life and could erupt again soon,†The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) warned Monday.
Alert level 2 remains hoisted over Mayon as the volcano continues to emit high level of sulfur dioxide with high and low frequency volcanic quakes, prompting the agency to enforce a strict “no entry†rule within the six-kilometer radius from the crater designated as danger zones, covering the cities of Ligao, Tabaco and Legazpi and towns of Camalig, Daraga and Sto. Domingo.
Disaster authorities said it is raising the 2,460-meter mountain’s alert status to “moderate unrest†from that of “low-level unrestâ€.
Mayon Volcano has spewed 791 tons of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) for the past 24 hours, which is way above the fluctuating range recorded during the past three days, philvolcs bulletin on Tuesday said.
The institute’s seismic instruments detected 7 high and low frequency volcanic earthquakes, bringing the total recorded quakes to 43 since October 5.
In its latest advisory, philvolcs authorities said the alert condition signifies a state of unrest which could lead to ash explosions or eventually to hazardous magmatic eruption.
Commanding officer of the Army’s 901st Brigade Col. Marlou Salazar said 35 trucks have been prepositioned in case an evacuation order is given by the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) once the volcano’s alert status is raised to level 3.
