The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced a new storm could potentially hit either Central or Northern Luzon by Friday night.
It may be recalled that in the last two weeks, the Philippines has experienced what may be considered two of the worst tropical cyclones to hit the country in terms of casualties and damages. Typhoons “Ondoy†(International Name: Ketsana) and “Pepeng†(International name: Parma) cost the lives of more than 600 people while damage to infrastructure and agriculture amounted to roughly 15 billion pesos in total.
According to the weather bureau’s latest bulletin, as of 10 a.m. today, the new storm “Lupit†(locally codenamed “Ramilâ€) was seen at 1,300 km east of Bicol, with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph and is expected to intensify in the evening.
In an interview on dzXL radio, Pagasa head Prisco Nilo said the country may be spared from potential landfall should the storm head for Taiwan.
State weather forecasters estimated “Lupit†to enter Philippine area of responsibility around 9 p.m. Friday should it not change its course.
