October 22, 2009 QUEZON City – It was a “sulit bayad” game, as San Sebastian College – Recoletos and San Beda College extended the game to two overtimes in game 1 of its best of 3 championship series for this year’s 85th NCAA Men’s Basketball crown.
At the final buzzer, the San Sebastian Stags emerged the victors against the heavily favored San Beda Red Lions, 72-68. The Stags are now one-win away to end it’s 7-year NCAA title drought.
The Red Lions, on the other hand, needs to win the last two games to complete a 4-peat, being the NCAA Men’s Basketball champions for 3 years in a row.
It was a game everyone thought to be San Beda’s. The Red
Lions were trailing 6 points in the last minute in the regulation but were able to tie the game, 53 – 53 with barely 9 seconds left in the 4th quarter. A rather “panicky” ball play by the Stags cost them two chances of shooting the ball which led to the first overtime.
San Beda fired two consecutive 3 points shot to grab the early lead in the first 5 minute game extension. However, both their offense and defense slacked which gave San Sebastian the opportunity to grab the lead less than one minute in the first overtime.
A series of missed free throws from the Stags gave San Beda another chance to even the game which led to another ovetime at 62 – 62.
The second overtime was obviously dominated by San Sebastian, which was even made complicated when two Red Lions shooters, Rome Adler Dela Rosa (SF) and Riego Gamalinda (SG) were fouled out in the first two minutes of the second overtime.
Game 2 of the 85 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship will be on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
