QUEZON CITY – Outclassing the defending and three-time NCAA Seniors Basketball Champion San Beda Red Lions, the San Sebastian Stags showed the crowd what it takes to be a Champion.
Suffering a 4-point deficit at the end of the first half, the Stags went on an offensive mode in the second half, ending the 3rd quarter with a 3-point lead over the Red Lions.
The final quarter was a disaster for San Beda Red Lions, as they were plagued with poor shooting, series of turnovers, injuries and were limited to delivering just 5 points in the entire quarter. The San Sebastian Stags ruled the offensive and defensive rebounds, as well as effectively limiting the Red Lions to outside shooting attempts as the bigger and quicker Stags intensified their inside defense.
“Bravo Baste!” roared inside the Araneta Coliseum every time a Stag steals a ball, or grab a rebound. Attendance was estimated at about 20,000 three-fourths of whom were Red Lion fans.
Rookie Coach Ato Agustin of San Sebastian Stags was the happiest man inside the arena when the final buzzer rang and the final score? 76 – 61.
San Sebastian Stags wins the NCAA Season 85 Seniors Basketball Finals Games series, 2-0.
