Dubai officially opened the world’s tallest building on January 4, Monday, caught everyone by surprise when Dubai’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum formally announced that the that the tower, which has so been called as Burj Dubai since its construction began, would be renamed Burj Khalifa, after the president of the United Arab Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan.
Such bold move believed to be as an act to recompense for Abu Dhabi’s $10 billion bailout of Dubai in December after the emirate admitted it was struggling to deal with more than $80 billion of debt.
Finally, the tower’s most guarded secret was revealed to the spectators, the official height of the skyscraper is 2,717 feet, more than 1,000 feet higher than Taiwan’s Taipei 101 which held the world’s tallest record since 2004.
