Two devotees died during the procession of the Black Nazarene from Luneta Grandstand to Quiapo Church was confirmed by PNRC Philippine National Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang. They were identified as 42 year-old Rodrigo Ocampo who succombed to cardiac arrest, and 40 year-old Bernardo Basilio who died from multiple injuries.
Both fatalities were rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment the former at the Ospital ng Maynila and the latter at Jose Reyes Medical Center. Records from PNRC showed that a total of 221 has sought first aid treatment, mostly from dizziness, hypertension and lack of oxygen. Senator Dick Gordon has also confirmed that another devotee, Adelina Bautista of Pasay City was rushed to Ospital ng Maynila when she was accidentally hit by a steel bar in the head.
The estimated crowd was estimated to have reached around 2 million according to Chief Superintendent Rodolfo Magtibay. Meanwhile, police have apprehended a devotee earlier for theft when he was caught stealing another devotee’s cellphone.
