Gilbert “Gibo†Teodoro, Lakas-Kampi-CMD standard bearer is eyeing on slapping more taxes on sin products in order to raise more revenues for the government. The targeted products include tobacco and alcohol, which according to Teodoro, needs to be applied with a simplified excise tax to support his revenue-enhancement measure.

The Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO) is preparing for a transport strike on February 23, Tuesday in Metro Manila. In a press conference, Efren de Luna of ACTO informed the public that said strike is targeting to achieve a single ticketing system where only one government agency is mandated to apprehend erring drivers.

A strong Aftershock was recorded Wednesday at around 6 o’clock in the morning measuring intensity 6.1 eight days after the major quake. The amount of damage made by the said aftershock is still being determined. Due to this, a number of Haitians expressed their desire to flee from their devastated country due to trauma from the killer quake.

Mayon volcano has not ejected ash since December 29, 2009 and the steam emission has considerably declined. Alert level 2 means that an imminent hazardous eruption is not likely to happen.

Manila RTC Judge Branch 26 Silvino Pampilo has dismissed the petition of Social Justice Society and transport group Pasang Masda against Pilipinas Shell, Chevron and Petron for allegedly conspiring to “cartelization†of oil in the country. The decision was based on the testimony of former National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Chief Solita “Winnie†Monsod.

Two devotees died during the procession of the Black Nazarene from Luneta Grandstand to Quiapo Church was confirmed by PNRC Philippine National Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang. They were identified as 42 year-old Rodrigo Ocampo who succombed to cardiac arrest, and 40 year-old Bernardo Basilio who died from multiple injuries.

Rice traders have announced an impeding P1.00 per kilo increase on rice in Metro Manila and P2.00 in Cebu during an international rice conference in Cebu. The minimum amount of rice therefore will reach the P31.00 mark per kilo and is expected to increase up to P39 until the end of 2010

Dubai officially opened the world’s tallest building that caught everyone by surprise when Dubai’s ruler, Sheik Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum formally announced that the that the tower, which has so been called as Burj Dubai since its construction began, would be renamed Burj Khalifa, after the president of the United Arab Emirates and emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan.

M/V Baleno 9, a roll on – roll off ferry bound for Batangas City sank off the coast of San Agapito Point in Verde Island at around midnight on December 26. Initial report from the Philippine Coast Guard showed that the manifest only listed 26 passengers and carried nine motor vehicles including 10-wheeler truck, 6-wheeler truck, a car and four cargo jeeps.

The Supreme Court, in a nine-page decision penned by Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales, has unanimously declared null and void Comelec Resolution No. 8585 which shortened the deadline of registration of voters last October 31, 2009 superseding Comelec Resolution No. 8514 which sets the deadline to December 15, 2009. Subsequent to this, it was ruled that the registration be extended until January 9 or 120 days before the May 10 elections.
