The death toll in the Manila hostage crisis rose to 10 on Tuesday, police reported even as President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino declared Wednesday as a “” for the victims of what is now called as the “Luneta bloodbath.”

For the second time, the Philippine Supreme Court (SC) reversed itself and declared as unconstitutional the creation by Congress of 16 new cities. In a close 7-6 vote, the SC ruled in favor of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) which protested that the “wholesale conversion” of the 16 towns into cities violated the 1987 Constitution.

The chief of the Manila Police District (MPD), who has been relieved from his post, testified on Thursday that Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim had ordered the arrest of the brother of a dismissed MPD captain who killed eight Hong Kong tourists in a botched rescue attempt.

A Metro Manila lower court has allowed child visitation rights to the estranged husband of the youngest sister of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, who is an actress and also known as the “queen of talk shows.” In an agreement forged between the two contending parties, the Regional Trial Court of suburban Makati City, Metro Manila granted the petition of athlete James Yap for a three-day a week right to visit his son with Kris, James Junior, 5.
